The worries I had with the Martin 00-18 1931 Authentic are all addressed with this!

A beauty and way out of my budget but thanks!

Very nice guitar Alan! About the only thing this model has in common with a 00-18 is body size. TFOA started with a 00-18 from Martin's custom shop and really re-worked this custom into quite a striking 00 model. The only thing I find odd with the spec's is 2.16 width at the saddle. Other than that this guitar's woods are really beautiful looking. Too much bling for my tastes but 12 fret 00's are hard to beat.

Tom - I understand your views on bling - I am partial to a bit personally. One thing though - I'm pretty certain this guitar is not one of those Martins commissioned by TOFA in celebration of their 20th anniversary. It does come with a 'TFOA Passport', but so do most new guitars sold by TOFA. It's just one more sales gimmick.
An example of a TOFA Martin commission is their 000-18, which is advertised as such in the description (and comes with a TFOA 20th Anniversary Booklet) :-

No big deal though and doesn't impact on your assessment of the 00-18VS above.

interesting that they opted for the 15' lower bout, which is smaller than the usual 16' on a dread. or is it common for a 12fret dread?

I'm not sure what the most common lower bout is on a 12 fret dread.

hi Vashondan,

i know taylor doesn't get a lotta love on these pages, and i generally agree that they sound thin,
but but but

for ease of play and richness of voice, the 322e 12 fret does it for me, and then some.
It's concert OO size, with mahogany top and tasmanian blackwood back and sides -- these tonewoods accounting, i'd guess, for the vocal depth and resonance. (it's not especially loud, but very responsive, and the electronics are acoustic-faithful when i need more volume.)

mine's got the traditional x brace --not the newer v--, and i've landed for now on EB aluminum bronze strings for that little extra old timey zing. i was able to find a mint one used; 'couldn't be happier.

good thing, too: they tend to be widely available at guit shops so easy to check out. if you tend to avoid the taylor section based on experiences with other models, i'd recommend making an exception for the 322.

that said, still jonesing like heck for an eastman E10 OO  or E20 OO (not the ss, the 12 fret, wide nut).

would love to get my hands in a collings too --just to try it. (outta my price range, though.

cheers and all best!

Yes, they're on my list.  Actually, high on the list!

yup, i can def vouch for the 322; worth checking out, for sure. lots of fun to play, deep woody voice (mahogany top, tasmanian blackwood back and sides)
