A question on picking - Tom Strum - 08-28-2024 For many years I held my flat pick like everyone else where the tip contacts the strings. One day I began holding it on its side so the widest part brushes the strings. I find it gives me more control and strumming/palming is enhanced. Don't recall how or why I changed. Anyone else play like this out there? Just curious. RE: A question on picking - Meathead - 08-28-2024 Tom - I can't say I've ever tried that. I think I might have a harder time hanging on to the pick in that orientation! RE: A question on picking - AlanSam - 08-29-2024 Interesting idea Tom - this is the forum for left field ideas! RE: A question on picking - Differs - 09-09-2024 Hi Tom long time guitarist, new forum member here…. I tend to use the rounded side for a mellower tone, and the tip for more focused playing i also use a variety of pick’s from standard Dunlop .73 ones up to 4mm gypsy jazz picks that are surprisingly good for flatpicking? Cheers RE: A question on picking - Tom Strum - 09-09-2024 Been using the Dunlop most of my life. Never did like the hard plastic ones. I can't recall how I stumbled into them. RE: A question on picking - Jure - 10-08-2024 Apparently Stevie ray used the pick that way, at least that's what I heard.....long time ago, I have played few years like that then I start using thicker picks (ultex), then I suddenly remembered that van halen used .60 very thin picks, now i use them almost exclusively. Who knows what's next, coins maybe? Who knows what's next, coins maybe? I like Blue Tortex .88’s mostly due to the tone I get with them. I can use others except for those very thin “clacky” picks. Cannot stand them. |
